Energy Levels and Business

It’s a fact of life. We have varying degrees of energy at different times. Some call it “biorhythms” and some just call it the ups and downs of existence.

Your business is what keeps you housed, fed, suppled with entertainment, etc. The income your business generates is what keep you going. And when you are your business, the low energy periods can really put a crimp in the income if you don’t have a way to deal with them.

Energy and BusinessSo how do you continue when you are at a low ebb?

There is something to be said for the old, “Just get up and go to work” ethic of a bygone era. However, the more systematized your business is, the more it can handle itself during those times when you are at the low points. Then, when you’re back on top, your new energy, creativity and ideas can reinvigorate the business.

In Sam Carpenter’s book, Work the System he talks about the transformative nature of systematizing your business. He took an answering service that required every moment of his life and every ounce of his energy, and, by putting systems into place so everyone (and anyone) in the company could do any and every job by following the systems, transformed it into a thriving concern that allowed him the income and the time luxury to do some pretty amazing things in his life.

So what are systems?

For everything you or anyone in your business does, there is a specific routine that is followed. Find what that routine is and set it down. Then, once you see it in writing, you can adjust it, make it more streamlined and more effective. Once that’s done, pretty much anything can be taught to someone with a modicum of intelligence. This starts taking you away from “putting out fires” mode, which many business people spend almost all their time in, so you can the concentrate on finding new and creative ways to grow and foster your business. Then you systematize those new things and so on and so on.

Then, when you are at one of those low ebb moments, you can honor them and the company is still running. Still thriving.
